JAKARTA, kolomberita.id - The annual security meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Southeast Asia (ASEAN) and several countries outside ASEAN took place from July 11 to yesterday, Friday, July 14 2023. Ministers of Foreign Affairs from 24 countries gathered at the Shangri-la Hotel, Jakarta to discuss important issues in global level. Issues surrounding international conflicts dominated the discussion at the meeting.
The meeting discussed various important issues, ranging from US-China competition, the Ukraine-Russia war, to North Korean missiles. All discussed the geopolitical turmoil that occurred in the past week. The participants agreed that it is important to maintain peace and stability in the region.
The day before, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had a candid meeting with China's Top Diplomat Wang Yi. This is the latest in a series of interactions to address the dispute between the two superpowers. This meeting was also the highlight of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers meeting.
As chairman of the Southeast Asian bloc this year, President Joko Widodo emphasized that ASEAN must not be a puppet of any party. All member countries must participate in maintaining world peace. This is in line with ASEAN's commitment to strengthening unity and solidity, as well as strengthening ASEAN's centrality in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
The meeting participants also highlighted ASEAN's role in overcoming conflicts in the region. They emphasized that ASEAN must remain neutral and not take sides in the conflict. ASEAN must also play an active role in finding a peaceful solution to overcome the conflict.
The ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting is also an opportunity for Indonesia to strengthen its position as a leader in the Southeast Asian region. In his speech, President Joko Widodo emphasized that ASEAN must continue to strengthen unity and solidity amidst increasingly fierce global competition. Thus, ASEAN can play a more active role in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
